Wolfgangs Forschung
2000-heute
“Attracted not only by the proposed research topic, but also by your gentle character and the way you cared about your students, I began my thesis work in your laboratory in Heidelberg about 45 years ago. What an excellent choice I made! You guided me with your profound knowledge in biochemistry and your enthusiasm for the understanding of metabolic and regulatory cellular processes, which shaped my whole scientific career. I followed you as a research assistant when you got a Professorship at the University of Bochum, and our relation soon turned into lasting friendship, which included also your and my family and continued, when I left Bochum. Countless wonderful memories are connected to our friendship and to our scientific collaboration, which also continued over the years until your last publication. For me, and I am sure for many other of your PhD students, you really lived up to the German expression for PhD supervisor, i.e. “Doktorvater”. You will stay in my heart and the heart of my children.” – Pepo (Josef Deutscher), France

“Kate and I are sorry to hear about Wolfgang’s passing. Of the many people I collaborated with as a scientist, he was one of the nicest and the most pleasant person that I met in my many years as a research scientist. Wolfgang was always thinking, and if he disagreed with someone’s position, he seemed to have a knack of putting his questioning in a gentle way, rather than a criticism at which most of us were adept. He had a quiet boyish smile, or a shrug of his shoulders that needed no translation.” – Bruce Waygood, Canada
